VCU’s Class of 2029 to move in this weekend
Virginia Commonwealth University will welcome one of its largest ever classes of first-year students this weekend as the Class of 2029 moves into the university’s residence halls, marking the beginning of VCU’s fall semester. This year’s incoming transfer class will also be the largest in four years, adding to the university’s overall enrollment growth.
With more than 4,500 students, the freshman class is expected to be the second-largest in VCU history. First-year enrollment is currently up 6.6% from fall 2024, and VCU’s total enrollment for the fall is projected to be more than 29,000, up 1.9% over last year, as of Aug. 12.
“We are thrilled to welcome over 4,500 freshmen, putting us on track for the second-largest class in VCU history,” said Hernan Bucheli, Ed.D., vice president for Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success. “This exceptionally talented and motivated freshman class is joining a vibrant community of continuing students.”
More than one-third (38%) of the incoming freshman class are first-generation college students, 40% are Pell-eligible, 89% are in-state students, and more than half (54%) have already transferred some college credit. The incoming students’ average high school GPA is 3.65.
Move-in will occur primarily on Friday, Aug. 15, and Saturday, Aug. 16. During move-in days, heavy traffic is expected, with limited parking in the vicinity of VCU’s residence halls.
In addition, Laurel Street will be closed between Broad and Main streets, beginning at 8 a.m. on both days. VCU Police will direct traffic at select intersections with North Laurel Street, including West Franklin and West Main streets.
VCU Police urges anyone traveling through VCU’s Monroe Park Campus during move-in to slow down, stay alert and use caution. Officers will strictly enforce traffic violations, including speeding and failure to obey posted signage.
On Monday, VCU will hold its annual Ram Spirit Walk, in which the incoming class joins a parade following New Student Convocation at the Siegel Center to be welcomed by students, student organizations, faculty and staff. Beginning at 2 p.m., there will be street closures along the parade route, including on North Harrison Street, Park Avenue, North Linden Street and Floyd Avenue to allow students to cross to the Commons Plaza. Streets will reopen at approximately 4:30 p.m.
